Did you ever wonder how Gospel music started, where and who?
I am glad to inform you that gospel music started with the Africans, who first arrived at British land in 1619 after being forcefully displaced from their motherlands left miles behind, but their traditional rhythms made them persevere the journey across the Atlantic since it kept their minds away from what they had left behind and uncertainties about their destiny.
Its believed that music helped them forge a common musical consciousness. In their understanding that organized sound could be an effective tool for communication, they created a world of sound and rhythm to chant, sing and shout about their conditions. Music wasn't a passive activity but made part of every aspect in daily life.
These music-rhythms were attached to work songs, field hollers and street cries, many of which were accompanied by dance. They could call for group response since they were cultural inventories that favoured communal participation.
some of these songs include;
